Former MLC of Samajwadi Party and former Director of UP Secondary Education Council Vasudev Yadav has been sent to jail in case of disproportionate assets. Vigilance Cell arrested him from his George Town residence in Prayagraj on Tuesday. ADGC (Criminal) Vinay Singh said that a team led by Inspector Nanhe Ram Saroj of Prayagraj Unit of Vigilance Department arrested Vasudev Yadav in compliance with the non-bailable warrant issued by the Varanasi MP/MLA Court.
Vasudev Yadav was brought from Prayagraj to Varanasi and he was produced in MP/MLA court. After being produced in court, he requested bail and hospitalization citing his diseases. However, the court rejected both his arguments and ordered him to be sent to jail and providing medical assistance as per the jail manual. Earlier on February 19, the court rejected the petition for anticipatory bail filed by Yadav in the disproportionate assets case.

The Vigilance Department had registered this case against him in Prayagraj in April 2021 for acquiring more assets from known sources of income. During the investigation, Vigilance received documents of 109 percent more assets than Visudev Yadav's income. He had bought properties in the name of his close relatives and opened many educational institutions. After the vigilance investigation, a charge sheet was filed against him in this case. Vasudev Yadav, a close associate of SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav, got into trouble after the formation of BJP -led government in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, when many complaints of corruption came to light against him.

The Uttar Pradesh government ordered a vigilance inquiry into the property of Vasudev Yadav on 12 September 2017. Vigilance made open investments against him, in which his income, expenditure and earned movable and immovable properties were examined from 1 September 1978 to 31 March 2014. Investigation revealed that he has 109 percent more assets than income. Vigilance sought permission from the government to register a case in Prayagraj on charges of possessing more assets from known sources of income against him. After getting the permission of the Uttar Pradesh government, the Vigilance Department filed a case of disproportionate assets in Prayagraj in April 2021 against Vasudev Yadav.
